Metropolitan Route 47 is a of collection north - south arterials stretching from Eltham to Oakleigh. The majority of this route is single carriageway.
Originally the route between Manningham Road and North Road was designated as MR40. Then in 1989, MR40 was realigned to flow via Doncaster Road and Springvale Road, and thus MR47 was introduced as the replacement. While north of Manningham Road, the original 1965 number for Williamson Road and Fitzsimons Lane, MR48, was truncated further north in Eltham, and thus MR47 was assigned as the new number.
The northern section of MR47, today collectively known with the declared name of Doncaster - Eltham Road, was first designated in the 1850's. It followed an original track that lead from Doncaster Hill to Diamond Creek. The bridge utilised by Fitzsimons Lane was constructed in 1961, and duplicated in 1991 [1].
MR47 connects with the Eastern Fwy in Box Hill North, and also with the Monash Fwy.
