Metropolitan Route 42 is a of collection east - west arterials stretching from Bulleen to Wonga Park, with the majority of this route being single carriageway. It was first introduced in 1965 with the original numbering plan.
The alignment of MR42 reflects primary use of the route in the early days - as a northeast route leading into the Templestowe township and further to the 1851 goldfields of Warrandyte. Thompsons Road, known originally as Templestowe Road until 1946, became the direct route to reaching the township, and in combination with Heidelberg - Warrandyte Road, quickly was seen as a viable option to Warrandyte. The establishment of Thompsons Road came in the 1850's, while Heidelberg - Warrandyte Road was established as early as 1840.
Thompsons Road was declared a main road in 1990 and 1993. Bulleen Road was declared a main road 1993, later state highway in 1999, while Heidelberg - Warrandyte Road became a main road in 1914 and 1940.
In 1989, the original alignment of MR42 through Templestowe (Union Street, Parker Street, Swilk Street, James Street, Andersons Street and Porter Street), was realigned to the south along Foote Street and then north along newly-created Williamsons Road between Foote Street and Porter Street. This created a duplex with MR52 on Foote Street and with MR47 along Williamsons Road. The former route through Templestowe is now Tourist Route 2. Also in 1989, MR42 was extended east from Warrandyte along Ringwood - Warrandyte Road (duplex with MR9) and Jumping Creek Road to Homestead Road in Wonga Park.
MR42 connects with the Eastern Fwy at Bulleen.
Focal Points (west to east): City, Templestowe, Warrandyte, Wonga Park
