| This incarnation of Alternative National Route 1 (ALT NR1) in South Western Victoria ran between Tyrendarra and Heywood, bypassing National Route 1 (Princes Highway West) as it headed towards Portland. This route was haphazardly signed, and it did not appear in any mapping publications during its lifetime. Estimates put the introduction of ALT NR1 around 1986, coinciding with the introduction of the State Route Numbering System in regional Victoria and with the major signage upgrade program in south western Victoria. Signage along the route confirms this, as the older 1970’s black signs did not have ALT NR1 shields. Even with the late 1980’s signage, only a handful of those actually included an ALT NR1 shield (though some of those signs that had no shield had the space for one). By 1998, the route was replaced by C191, with C176 co-signed along Woolsthorpe - Heywood Road. It appears C191 was signed along Woolsthorpe - Heywood Road (forming the unusual duplex with C176) to create a continuous route between Heywood and Tyrendarra, in the same way ALT NR1 did. |
