Freeway Route F87 was the southerly most Freeway Route assigned on to the Mornington Peninsula Freeway between Bittern-Dromana Road (formerly Nepean Hwy) in Dromana and Jetty Road in Rosebud.

F87 was first signed in 1974 following the opening of the Bittern-Dromana Road - McCulloch Street section. F87 was extended in 1975 when the Mornington Peninsula Freeway opened to Jetty Road.

When the northern section of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway between Chelsea and Seaford opened in 1980, space was reserved on direction signs where an additional route number shield could be placed adjacent to the Metropolitan Route 11 shield. On closer inspection of these signs (which have now been replaced by M11 direction signs), an outline in the shape of a Freeway Route shield can be seen on the sign face.

This has led to speculation that a Freeway Route number was considered for the northern section of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway, possibly as route F87, however it is unknown why one was never signed. Although there were plans to connect both the northern and southern sections, it was not until 2013 when this occurred with the opening on Peninsula Link, and this possibly could have been the reason why that the northern section was not bestowed with a F route number. However it should be noted that having two separate sections of a Freeway Route had been done before - route F81 on the Mulgrave and Tullamarine Freeways. On a side note, the Frankston Freeway also did not receive a Freeway Route number when it was connected to the northern section of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway.

Towards the end of the 1980s, F87 was decommissioned and replaced by Metropolitan Route 11.
