State Route 189 (SR189) was introduced in 1986 along the main tourist route to Wilsons Promontory. SR189 followed Meeniyan - Promontory Road between the South Gippsland Highway at Meeniyan and the entrance to Wilsons Promontory National Park; then following Wilsons Promontory Road from the park entrance to Tidal River. SR189 forms part of the route between Melbourne and Wilsons Promontory.

Both Meeniyan - Promontory Road and Wilsons Promontory Road are two-lane single carriageway.

In 1998, SR189 in its entirety was replace by C444 in the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme.
