| State Route 181 stretched the entire distance of the Bass Highway along the Bass Strait coast. The route services tourist regions such as Phillip Island and Inverloch as well as the coal mining town of Wonthaggi. When the final section of Bass Hwy between Inverloch and Leongatha was proclaimed as a state highway in 1990, SR181 was appriopriately extended from the intersection with Inverloch - Venus Bay Road to the South Gippsland Highway in Leongatha. The majority of the Bass Hwy is two-lane single carriageway, with dual carriageways north of Grantville. In 1998, the entire route was replaced by M420, A420 and B460 in the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme. |
