Start Route 176 provided access to Mount Donna Buang from the Warburton Highway at Warburton, reaching an altitude of 1245 metres at the summit carpark. SR176 followed the windy Acheron Way and Mount Donna Buang Rd through thick fern gullies and Mountain Ash forest.

The route was a later addition to the State Route Numbering System, as it did not appear in the 1986 plan, leaving the introduction of this route sometime in or around 1990. It was most likely added as Mount Donna Buang is an occasional snowfield during the winter months.

It is unknown if SR176 was ever signed, as Vicroads audit photos along route do not show any shields or trailblazers, though it is possible SR176 shields were present as the intersection with SR174 (Warburton Highway).

The route is entirely single carriageway, narrow in some sections.

In 1998, SR176 was replaced by C505 along Donna Buang Rd and C507 along Acheron Way.
