State Route 174 stretched the entire distance of the Warburton Hwy between Lilydale and Warburton. A large section of the route ran parallel to the Yarra River, serving the towns of Wandin, Yarra Junction and Launching Place along the way. The Warburton Hwy is a two-lane single carriageway, with full line marking.

SR174 shared the road with SR175, between Don Rd and Yarra Junction - Noojee Rd from 1990 onwards until the route numbering change.

In 1998, the entire route was replaced by B380 in the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme.
