Start Route 172 provided access to winter snow resort of Lake Mountain from the Maroondah Highway at Narbethong via Marysville.The route is entirely single carriageway, with some sharp turns as the route climbs towards Lake Mountain.

The roads between Maroondah Highway and Lake Mountain Road was declared a Main Road (now Arterial), while Lake Mountain Road to the summit village is undeclared, though VicRoads has responsibility of maintaining and managing this section since 1998. In addition, the relevant Alpine Resort Management Board also fund and carry out other works and operational activities on Lake Mountain Road, including snow clearing. ^[1]

In 1998, SR172 was replaced by C512 along Marysville Road, Marysville - Woods Point Road and Lake Mountain Road.
