State Route 164 (SR164) traversed the entire route of Mount Buller Road from Mansfield to Mount Buller's summit village. It is the only road in and out of the popular ski resort, with much higher traffic volumes during winter snow season. SR164 was a member of routes which required wheel chain during declared winter snow periods.

The section of road between Mansfield and Stirling Road in Mirimbah was a declared Main Road (now Arterial), while the 13 km road west of Mirimbah to the summit village is undeclared, though Vicroads has responsibility of maintaining and managing this section since 1998. In addition, the relevant Alpine Resort Management Board also fund and carry out other works and operational activities on Mount Buller Road, including snow clearing. [1]

In 1998, the entire route was replaced by C320 in the Statewide Route Numbering Scheme.
