F80 was one of the first Freeway Routes to be introduced in Melbourne. The South Eastern Freeway between Batman Avenue and Toorak Road received this number in the mid 1970's, most likely around 1973, replacing Metropolitan Route 80 which was introduced in 1965.

During F80's lifespan, it has been reported that remnants of Metropolitan Route 80 remained along the route and on approaching roads, giving rise to speculation that F80 may have been haphazardly signed.

It was decommissioned in 1988 when the South Eastern Freeway was linked to the Mulgrave Freeway via the construction of the South Eastern Arterial.
